Eye & Vision Exams

While there are a number of different factors that can cause dry eyes, one fact remains for all of them: Dry eyes are irritating and uncomfortable. If you have had the unpleasant experience of suffering from dry eyes for any length of time, you probably know just how desperate people become to relieve their symptoms. The market for eye drops that only offer temporary relief is flooded with a variety of different options.

Unfortunately, these measures are not designed to last for a long time, and having to constantly carry eye drops with you can get old. That is why Lakeside Eye Associates has specialized in specific techniques to get at the underlying causes of dry eye and offer you real relief from the effects and discomfort associated with dry eye.

The Causes of Dry Eye

Your dry eye can often be the result of seasonal allergies, dust or smoke in the air, or excessive amounts of wind that cross the eye and prematurely dry out the natural lubricant from your eye. These effects are generally short in nature and can be corrected rather quickly. For patients that experience dry eyes that are moderate to significant in the severity, and that last for more than a few days, the problem could be an issue with the glands in the eye that help to secrete moisture to help your eyes function naturally and without pain.

The Meibomian glands are found in the eyelids that produce the oily layer in the tears that are constantly secreted to the eye. These tears help to defend your eyes from infection, bacteria, and irritation.

Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MBD, is often the root cause of your persistent dry eye symptoms. Typically, MBD is caused because the glands become damaged or blocked. Over time, the effects of dry eyes can have more uncomfortable and permanent effects on our vision, so it is important to schedule an appointment when you begin to notice the signs of dry eye.

Treating Dry Eye

Rather than quickly prescribe a natural tear product, our staff will want to make sure that we really understand what is going on with your eyes. Once our staff has been able to identify and diagnose the issue, we may recommend Lipiflow treatment to help correct your dry eyes.

Lipiflow is an in-office treatment that can be completed in just a single visit.

This procedure delivers heat and therapeutic movement to the eyelids and Meibomian glands to help break up any blockages around the glands and allow them to begin working properly again. As soon as the blockage has been removed, the glands will start to function normally again, and full function will generally be restored within six to eight weeks of treatment.

The special device that administers your procedure is attached to each eyelid for a quick, 12-minute procedure. These single-use applicators ensure that the targeted heat and additional pressure does not impact your eye or vision. Once your procedure has been completed, you will be able to leave the office and go about your normal daily routine. In the period immediately following the procedure, you may still want to use some sort of artificial tears until the glands have gained full function again.

Lipiflow is considered a safe approach to the treatment of MBD and is often one of the most effective forms of treatment to help with your dry eye.
